Bicycle Tours

During these guided tours you will bicycle on routes in the country surroundings of Bruges with very specific geographical attractions along the way. These routes are completed in roughly three hours but if you in fact would like to pause by one or another particular monument along the route you may always opt to request a longer than three hour tour from our guides. You provide bicycles for the persons in your group and we provide the guided bicycle tour.

Castle Residences

Depart Bruges city centre via the "Boom" street and continue along the "Diksmuidse" road, an old roman route. First stop is the "Beisbroek" heath, a moor region designated since the 12th century. The "Tudor" is a castle mansion in Tudor style with Neo Gothic influences and dates from 1904 becoming city domain since 1981. The third castle residence on the route is the castle ofLoppem. This Neo Gothic complex dating from 1859 was erected under the leadership of the architect J.B. Bethune. The Castle residence of Tillegem dates from the second half of the 19th century and stands on the previous foundations from a 14th century fortified castle. It is now a provincial domain. The tour ends back in Bruges.

The 'Zwin' region polder lands

Depart Bruges city centre via the "Dam" gate and continue along the "Damse" ocean-going canal and further along the "Zuider" canal along old fortifications. First stop is the city of Damme itself, a medieval out port of Bruges. Especially the church and the hospital from the 13th century and the city hall from the 15th century are more than worth the visit. Thereafter, the tour continues into a canal and country landscape with water dykes dating from the 12th to 13th centuries: the old "Sluis" dyke and the "Zee" dyke. The "Lapscheurse Gat" is a side waterway tributary of the "Zwingeul" waterway dating from the 16th century.Oostkerke is a typical polder land village and its Saint Quinton’s church (baptismal font: 1646) and with the 14th century foundations of a local castle house. The tour ends back in Bruges along the canal linking Bruges to Sluis that was constructed in 1811 by order of Napoléon Bonaparte.

The coastal polder lands

Depart Bruges city centre via the "Scheepsdale" bridge and continue along the "Oostende" ocean-going canal. First stop is the "Meetkerkse Moeren", a peat cutting region in the Middle Ages with a surface area of 570 hectares and lying 1.5 meters under the sea level which has a very unique fauna and flora biotope. Thereafter, the city of Lissewege is next, a quiet polder land village with as eye catcher the early gothic church (circa 1225) with typical polder land towers. The Abbey farm "Ter Doest" follows and is mostly known for its monumental barn house dating from the 13Th century. The tour continues alongside the "Baldwin" canal back to Bruges. This canal was constructed at the end of the 19th century and provides a waterway link between Bruges and Zeebrugge. Dimensions: 11.5 km long and 80 m wide.
